Answer the following questions to review for the test:

1. In what ways did the people in the story change on Mars? Would you say the changes were a bad thing? Why or why not?

2. A simile is a figure of speech in which something from one field of experience is said to be similar to something in another field. It is used to help us imagine more clearly something being described by comparing it with something else. A simile begins with “like” or ”as”.
For example:
* “as marrow comes from a white bone”
* “like children’s delicate bones”
Give three other examples of similes used in the story.

3. A metaphor is a figure of speech in which an expression from one field of experience is used to say something in another field. A metaphor goes one step further than a simile and makes the comparison a direct one, omitting the words “like” or ”as”. It helps us to imagine something being described by saying it is something else.

For example: -
“the blowing lakes of grass”
Give three other examples of metaphors used in the story.

4. Why does Harry Bittering want to return to Earth as soon as he gets out of the rocket?

5. Why does Cora Bittering want to stay on Mars?

6. How does Harry try to resist the changes that are happening to others? Is he successful?

7. How does Harry’s attitude toward his rocket change over the course of the summer?

8. What do the Bitterings leave behind when they go to the mountains for the summer?
9. Look at the boxed passage on page 251. What does the house symbolize to Harry?
10. Look at the boxed passage on page 252. What is ironic about the comments?
11. What does the wind symbolize?
12. What do the Bitterings find as they walk through the Martian hills?
13. Compare the Martian villa to the house in the valley.
14. Why won’t Harry eat anything that is grown in the garden?
15. What can we infer from Harry’s action of eating the sandwich?
16. Why won’t the other men help Harry build the rocket?

Root Word Clusters

Using Inspiration, you will create 5 Root Word clusters. Each cluster must have the following parts:

  1. Root word
  2. Root word meaning
  3. Three (3) examples of word that use that root
  4. A definition of the example using the root word meaning and a definition of how it is commonly used (see third graphic below)
  5. Three (3) prefixes that can be used with that root
  6. The meaning of each prefix and an example of the prefix used with the root (can be the same as examples from step 3)
  7. Three (3) suffixes that can be used with that root
  8. The meaning of each suffix and an example of the suffix used with the root (can be the same as examples from step 3)
  • You may re-use prefixes and suffixes with different roots, BUT you may NOT use the same 3 prefixes and suffixes for all 5 roots

Be creative and change colors, bubbles and fonts. Do not overpower the cluster with too many wild colors - have a system to your colors like in the example - all examples were the same color bubble, all prefixes were the same color bubble. If using pictures, this may not apply.

Either use Notes or other bubbles for steps 4, 6 and 8 above.

When you’re done, export your cluster to a word document. You will need to do the outline separate from the graphic. Export the outline as a Word document and the cluster as a .jpg graphic. Edit/Format the word document with the cluster at the top and the outline below. You will need to add bullets to the outline - you may use letters, number or symbols. Put the outline into columns or a table so that the cluster and the outline all fit on one page.

20 Word Summary

On your own blog, write a 20 word summary for the Titanic story.

Finishing Tangerine

This page contains things you should know/understand in order to be successful during Monday’s Chalk Talk activity.

During the chalk talk the class will be split into two groups. Each group will space themselves out around the piece of banner paper. On the paper I will have written things about the book that you will respond to. Those things will be themes, settings, characters and incidents from the book. You will each have about a minute at each area and then you will move on to the next one. This is a silent activity where you will communicate with markers. At each area you can respond by:

  • Drawing a picture
  • Adding a talking balloon
  • Adding a thinking balloon
  • Labeling
  • Writing a short phrase or question
  • Writing an original thought or a response to another idea or question already expressed on the paper.

After everyone has had a turn at each area, the groups will discuss what they have written/drawn. Each group will decide how they have created something that re-tells the story and one or more people from each group will present that re-telling to the rest of the class.
